## Why We Ask for the Serial Number

On built-in appliances the serial number, not the model, decides which board, valve or hinge fits. Here is why, and what that means for lead times and cost.

The first thing we ask on the phone is not what is wrong. It is what the rating
plate says. That sounds like bureaucracy and it is not: on built-in appliances
the serial number decides which part fits, and the difference between having it
and not having it is usually the difference between one visit and two.

## Model tells you what it is, serial tells you what is inside it

A model number identifies a product as it was sold. It stays the same across
years of production. What does not stay the same is the inside: manufacturers
revise control boards, change a valve supplier, alter a hinge, re-spec a sensor
or move a connector, and they do it mid-run without changing what is printed on
the front of the appliance. Those revisions are tracked against serial ranges.

So two machines carrying the same model designation, built a year apart, can
genuinely take different boards, different fill valves and different door
hardware — and the parts are frequently not interchangeable in either direction.
A board from the later range may expect a connector the earlier harness does not
have. A revised valve may have a different flow rating. Fitting the wrong one is
not a minor inconvenience; it is a part that has to come back out, a machine
that is still broken, and a second appointment.

## Where the plate is

It is never anywhere convenient, but it is always somewhere consistent:

- **Built-in refrigeration.** Usually inside the fresh-food compartment on a
side wall or on the ceiling near the front, sometimes behind the top grille.
- **Wall and steam ovens.** On the frame behind the door, along one of the
vertical edges. On a stacked pair, each cavity has its own — and they are not
necessarily from the same production run, which surprises people.
- **Dishwashers.** On the tub flange behind the door, usually on the right side.
- **Built-in coffee systems.** Behind the drip tray or on the frame behind the
  service door.

A photograph of the plate is worth more than a transcription. Serial formats mix
letters and digits in ways that are easy to mistype, and a single wrong
character can point at an entirely different production range.

## Lead times, honestly

Parts fall into roughly three groups, and it is fair to know which one you are
in before you agree to anything.

**On the shelf.** Common wear items — gaskets, thermistors, fan motors, drain
and circulation pumps, filters, common valves. These are the repairs that finish
in one visit.

**A few days out.** Serial-specific control boards, user interfaces, hinge sets,
ice maker assemblies and sealed-system components. These are ordered against the
serial after the diagnosis, which is exactly why the diagnosis comes first and
the estimate comes before the order.

**Long, or not available.** On older equipment a part is occasionally out of
production. When that happens we say so plainly rather than stringing out a
search. Sometimes there is a superseding part number that fits; sometimes there
is not, and the honest answer is that the appliance has reached the end of what
can be economically repaired.

## Why we fit OEM

We fit genuine OEM parts rather than aftermarket equivalents, and the reason is
the same reason the serial matters. Control boards and valves in this class of
appliance are matched to a specific configuration rather than built to a generic
standard, and an equivalent that is close enough to fit is not necessarily close
enough to behave. It is also what lets us stand behind the part for a year.

## And when the answer is not us

If the appliance is still inside its original manufacturer coverage and the
fault looks like a covered defect, use that coverage. We are an independent shop
and not a warranty service provider, so that work is not ours to bill and should
not cost you anything. Tell us the serial and the approximate purchase date and
we will tell you honestly which side of that line you are on before anyone books
a visit.
