That geography, more than the age of any appliance, sets what we find when we open a machine here. ## Salt on the outside, sulphide on the inside Ocean-facing kitchens in Sea Colony and along the beachfront take the classic salt exposure: a fine chloride film that settles on every surface air passes over. On a built-in refrigerator that means the condenser, because the condenser is the one component whose entire job is to move air across metal. The fins take on a grey fur that people reasonably mistake for dust. It is corrosion product, and it insulates the surface that is supposed to shed heat, so the compressor runs longer and the fresh-food compartment drifts warm on the hottest afternoons of the year. The marsh side is different and less well known. Houses in Davis Shores and the Intracoastal edge of Marsh Creek back onto tidal flats that give off sulphide compounds at low tide, and sulphide attacks copper and brass rather than steel. We see it as blackened copper tubing behind refrigeration, tarnished contacts in control housings, and connector pins that have gone dull enough to make an intermittent circuit. The failure reads exactly like a flaky control board, and replacing the board fixes it for a while because the new connector is clean. ## Raised houses and the second refrigerator A great deal of island housing sits on piers or above a ground-level garage, which is where the overflow refrigerator or wine unit usually ends up. That space is unconditioned. In August it runs humid and warm, in January it swings cold, and it is open to the same air as the outside. Appliances rated for conditioned indoor rooms do not enjoy that duty, and the two symptoms we get called for — a unit that will not hold temperature in summer, and one that sweats and rusts at the door — both trace back to the location rather than the machine. If the appliance has to live down there, we will say what can be done about it: condenser access and cleaning on a real schedule, a door gasket that seals properly, and honest expectations about lifespan. ## Storms, outages and the boards that fail afterwards The island takes the weather first. The area averages roughly 68 thunderstorm days a year, and the coast has had multi-day outages in living memory — Matthew in 2016, Irma in 2017, Helene in 2024. What we see afterwards is rarely an appliance destroyed on the day. It is a control board that fails two or three weeks later, and an inverter-driven compressor that starts short-cycling in the same window, because the damage is cumulative and the final event is only the one that finished the job. That timing is the reason people so often tell us the appliance was fine after the storm. It was. Surge protection at the panel does more for a kitchen full of electronics than any individual outlet strip, particularly here, where most built-in equipment is hard-wired or plugged into an outlet nobody can reach behind a cabinet. ## Getting there Everything reaches the island over a bridge, and the Bridge of Lions is a bascule bridge that opens on a published schedule. We book island appointments with that in mind, which is why we hold a wider arrival window for 32080 than for an inland call and why we would rather bring the likely parts with us than make a second crossing for a fifteen-minute repair. ## The routine that actually helps here Twice a year, pull the grille and look at the condenser. If the fins are grey rather than silver, they need cleaning, and cleaning them is the cheapest service anyone on this island can buy. Rinse exterior vent caps and hood dampers of salt. Check that the ventilation damper still swings freely, because seized dampers are the most common cause of weak extraction in beachfront kitchens. None of that requires us.
