### Detail

A built-in coffee machine does more mechanical work in a morning than the rest
of the kitchen does in a week. It grinds, doses and tamps a puck, heats a small
volume of water to just under boiling, drives it through that puck at high
pressure, ejects the puck, and returns a piston to a home position — and then
does the whole sequence again ten minutes later. Almost every complaint we take
is one of those steps failing, and the useful thing is that they fail in ways
you can tell apart from the cup.

## Reading the symptom

**Fast and thin.** Pressure is not building against the puck. That is a brew
group seal that has hardened, a grind that has drifted coarse, or a pump that no
longer makes its rated pressure. The shot arrives quickly and tastes weak rather
than bitter.

**Slow and bitter, or nothing at all.** The opposite fault. A blocked path, a
compacted puck or a grind that has gone fine enough to choke the group.

**Warm rather than hot.** A thermoblock or boiler that is not reaching setpoint,
a temperature sensor reading high, or a long idle path that gives the shot up to
the metal on the way through. Worth checking whether the first cup of the day is
the bad one or whether all of them are — that distinction alone separates a
warm-up problem from a heating fault.

**Stops part-way through.** Usually the brew group failing to complete its
travel, which the control reads as a fault and aborts on. A jam of grounds
behind the chamber, a drive gear with a stripped tooth, or a position sensor
that has lost its reference.

## The brew group

The brew group is the moving heart of the machine: a piston, a chamber, and a
set of seals that have to hold pressure while a motor drives them through a
cycle. Seals harden and shrink with heat and age; when they do, pressure bleeds
past instead of through the puck and the result tastes exactly like a weak
grind. Most brew groups can be serviced rather than replaced, provided they have
been kept reasonably clean. The ones we cannot save are usually the ones that
ran for years on an oily dark roast with no rinse cycle, because coffee oil
polymerises into a varnish that no cleaning tablet lifts.

## Grinder and milk system

Grinder complaints divide neatly. A grinder that runs with no output has a
bridged hopper or a packed chute, both usually caused by oily beans. A grinder
that sounds different has worn burrs or, less often, a stone or a staple that
came in with the beans. Milk system faults are nearly always the tubing, the
valve or the air intake, and nearly always fixable in one visit — soured milk
residue is the culprit far more often than a failed part.

## The water path

Every machine has a cleaning cycle for its water path, and that cycle works on
deposit rather than on geometry. It will not restore a passage that has been
crusted, stripped and crusted again many times over, and it will not repair a
pump that has spent a year working against an obstruction. The test is simple:
if a proper cleaning cycle improves things for a few weeks and the symptoms then
return, the path itself needs replacing rather than treating again. We would
rather tell you that once than take your money twice a year for a result that
gets shorter every time.

## Plumbed and tank models, and the cabinet around them

The two configurations service differently. A plumbed machine takes the house
supply directly through an inlet valve and a filter, which means the shutoff,
the line and the filter are all part of the diagnosis before the machine is. A
tank model has no plumbing to fail but does have a tank sensor, and a machine
that insists it is empty with a full tank is usually reporting a sensor rather
than a level.

Access is worth mentioning too. Built-in coffee systems sit in a tall cabinet
run, often above or below an oven, and the service position is at the back. Most
come forward on rails or slides; a few are through-the-front only, which changes
what can be done in one visit. Tell us which appliance is above and below it
when you call, because a shared cooling path in a tall stack occasionally means
the fault is in the neighbour rather than the machine you are calling about.
