The griddle heated hot at one end and barely at the other. He tested both legs of the element, found one open and fitted a new one. Pancakes the same colour right across the plate for the first time since we bought it.

What to do in the first minute when the oven smells of gas, how to tell burn-off and food residue from a real leak, and what a technician checks afterward.

Gas safety
An electric wall oven has no gas line, so a gas smell near one points to a range or cooktop close by, or to no gas at all.

If your oven smells like gas and the odor is strong, keeps building or hangs around after the burner should have lit, treat it as a leak. Touch no switches, put out any flame, get everyone outside, and call the gas utility, your propane supplier or 911 once you are away from the house. A faint sulfur note for a second or two while a gas oven lights, gone as soon as the flame settles, is normal. So is the hot, chemical odor of a new oven burning off the protective coatings it shipped with.
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) sets out a short order for fuel gas leaks, the same whether your St. Johns County kitchen runs on a gas main or a propane tank.
An appliance technician comes after the gas provider has cleared the home, never before.
Natural gas and propane are odorless as delivered; suppliers add mercaptan so that a leak smells of rotten eggs or a freshly struck match. Most oven smells are something else.
A new oven, or one with fresh insulation around the cavity, gives off a sharp plastic or chemical smell, sometimes with light smoke, for its first few heatings. Run it empty and hot with the hood on and a window open, and the smell shrinks with each session. Grease on the oven floor or a boiled-over dish produces a scorched, acrid smell every time the oven warms; clean the cold cavity and see whether the smell leaves with the mess. The self-clean cycle on Thermador Professional range ovens runs for 2 hours with the door locked and the surface burners shut off, and it will not start again for 24 hours, so a heavy baked-on smell during that window is expected.
A gas oven’s bake burner catches a moment after its valve opens, so a short puff of odor at ignition is simply how it works. Pay attention when that puff grows stronger than it used to be, when a soft thump comes with the flame, or when preheating drags. Those signs usually mean the igniter is weakening and letting extra gas gather before it lights. That calls for a repair, not an evacuation, provided the smell clears once the flame is steady. A smell with the oven switched off is a leak; go back to the first minute.
On the cooktop, a burner that clicks without lighting often has its cap sitting crooked, so reseat it first. The igniter tip is fragile ceramic: clean it only with a cotton swab dampened in soapy water and never scrape it.
NFPA warns that people stop noticing mercaptan after a minute or two of exposure, so a smell that seems to fade while you stand at the stove may still be there. A fuel gas alarm does not tire. NFPA 715 places these alarms near fuel-burning appliances and outside sleeping rooms, set to sound at or below 10 percent of the lower explosive limit, well before the kitchen air could ignite.
The visit works from the supply inward. The range is pulled forward and the connection is tested with leak-detection solution. Thermador’s installation guide for Professional ranges calls for a ¾-inch flex line to a ½-inch threaded inlet, with natural gas supplied at 7 to 14 inches of water column and a 5-inch manifold setting, or propane at 11 to 14 inches with a 10-inch manifold. Next come the igniter and the oven valve; an all-gas model powers its igniters from a 120-volt outlet on a 15 or 20 amp circuit, so the outlet gets checked as well. Before the range slides back, it is seated in its anti-tip bracket, which voluntary safety standards require manufacturers to supply with every new range.
Diagnosis is a flat $80. When the culprit is a worn igniter or spark module, the repair typically lands in the $200–$490 range, and you get the firm figure once the fault is confirmed. The full list sits on the pricing page.
Completed work, parts and labor together. Most of what we do on this page lands between $190 and $510; the $80 visit comes off that once you approve the repair.

The rangetop cut out whenever the oven below was running. He measured the circuit under load and showed us the sag, which turned out to be a loose lug in the panel rather than anything wrong with the appliance.

The oven never reached the temperature on the dial. He renewed the thermostat and recalibrated it against a probe. A good result, though it took two trips because the correct part was not on the van at the first visit.
