$80 diagnostic, credited toward the repair when you approve it

An appliance repair technician in a plain work shirt standing in a client kitchen with a digital multimeter in one hand.
The meter comes out before anything is quoted. A reading under load separates a supply fault from a failed board, and it costs nothing to take.

Coverage

40 miles around St. Augustine. A mobile service on scheduled appointments, with no walk-in counter and no after-hours line.

Storms

68 thunderstorm days in an average year. Control boards rarely die in one event; they die from repeated surges across seasons.

Scope

1 manufacturer, and no second one. One parts catalogue, one set of service manuals, one family of control boards to know properly.

Kitchens, and only kitchens: built-in refrigeration, cooking, dishwashing, hoods and coffee. We are not a heating or air-conditioning trade and do not work on furnaces, heat pumps, air handlers or house ducting. What we service.

What we check, and in what order

A built-in appliance has four things that can be wrong with it, and they are not equally likely or equally expensive. We work through them in the order that costs you least: supply and circuit, then airflow and clearance, then the sealed or heated system, then the control board. Most warm-refrigerator calls end at airflow or defrost. Most oven calls end at an element leg or a temperature sensor. Neither is the part people arrive expecting to buy.

The two things that shorten appliance life in St. Johns County are the ocean and the weather. Within a mile or two of the water, in the 32084 ZIP and on the island, condenser fins take on a grey fur that is corrosion product rather than dust, and hinges, latches and fasteners go with them. Everywhere else, the season does it: roughly 68 thunderstorm days a year, multi-day outages after the big storms, and control boards that fail weeks later with nothing obvious to blame.

Before the estimate

A voltage reading under load and a level across the opening cost nothing and rule out the faults that only look like a failed board.

What does a repair usually cost here?

Completed work, parts and labor together. Most of what we do on this page lands between $430 and $2,520; the $80 visit comes off that once you approve the repair.

Ranges for completed work, not quotations. The firm figure is written down after the diagnosis, at the appliance, and nothing is ordered before you have it.
What gets replaced Parts and labor
Refrigeration column sealed system $850–$2,520
Control board or touch panel $430–$1,090

Straight answers

What does a service visit cost?
A visit is a flat $80 diagnostic. That covers travel, testing and a written explanation of what failed and why. If you approve the repair, the $80 is credited toward it. You get a written estimate before any part is ordered or any labor is billed, so nothing is open-ended.
Is it worth fixing, or should I just replace it?
That depends on which part failed and on the condition of everything around it, not on the age of the appliance. Most of the repairs we publish figures for finish well under half of what a comparable new built-in costs; sealed-system work on a corroded cabinet is the one that does not. We work the comparison out in writing after the diagnosis, and the repair-or-replace page sets both sets of figures side by side.
Are you affiliated with Thermador?
No. Matanzas Kitchen Service is an independent appliance repair company, and working on one manufacturer was our own decision rather than an appointment by anyone. We name the brand only to say which appliances we work on. If your appliance is still inside its factory warranty, call the manufacturer first — that work should cost you nothing. The full independence statement is in the footer of every page.
Do you charge by the hour?
No. The visit is a flat $80 diagnostic rather than an hourly rate, so a fault found in forty minutes and one found in two hours cost you the same. The labor for the repair itself is quoted in the written estimate as part of the job, never billed by the clock, and the $80 comes off the total once you approve the work.
What warranty comes with the repair?
Ninety days on our labor and three hundred sixty-five days on the parts we install. We fit genuine OEM parts, not aftermarket equivalents, because control boards and valves in these appliances are matched to the model rather than generic.
Which part is the expensive one to replace?
On refrigeration it is the sealed system — the compressor and the refrigerant circuit it sits in — and on cooking appliances it is the control board or touch panel. Elements, sensors, igniters, hinges and seals all sit well below either. That is why the diagnosis decides the number rather than the symptom, and why the price bands on this site are published as ranges.
Which areas do you cover?
St. Augustine and St. Johns County, out to roughly forty miles. That includes Palencia, World Golf Village, King & Bear, Murabella, SilverLeaf, Marsh Creek, Davis Shores, Camachee Island and Sea Colony. We are a mobile service and keep no walk-in counter.
When can you come out?
Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 6:00pm, and Saturday 9:00am to 4:00pm. Closed Sunday. Appointments are scheduled in advance and we do not run an after-hours line, so a message left overnight is answered the next working morning.
Do you work on other brands?
No. We service Thermador appliances only. Staying with one manufacturer means one set of service manuals, one parts catalogue and one family of control boards to know properly, which is what shortens a diagnosis from two visits to one.
Do you repair heating or air conditioning?
No. We are a kitchen appliance trade: built-in refrigeration and wine storage, ranges and cooktops, steam and wall ovens, dishwashers, ventilation hoods and built-in coffee systems. Furnaces, heat pumps, air handlers, condensing units and the duct system that heats and cools a house are somebody else's work, and we do not quote or install any of it. The one duct we deal with is the short run between a kitchen hood and its cap.

Ours ground the beans and then stopped without brewing. He found a small stone wedged in the chute, cleared it and checked the burrs had not been damaged. Working the same day, and no part needed.

Magnus L.

The upper rack came out wet while the lower rack was dry. He found the heating element open and the thermistor drifting, replaced both, and ran a cycle through to check. Dry dishes top and bottom now.

Thaddeus O.

Our hood sounded like a bag of spanners at the top speed. He found the wheel thrown out of balance by grease and cleaned it back to bare metal rather than selling us a blower. Quiet, and it moves air again.

Rory U.
